According to Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, three people have died and at least one person is missing as a result of torrential rain in New Zealand, which has caused major flooding and numerous evacuations.
“The loss of life emphasizes the sheer scale of this weather event and how quickly it turned tragic,” Hipkins said after meeting with emergency services and surveying the damage in Auckland. “It’s obvious that there will be a significant cleanup effort.”
“This is an unprecedented event,” Hipkins, who was only sworn in this week, tweeted. “We will provide you with as much assistance as we can.”
